Northern Electricity Discos Lose N74 Billion Due to Power Outages

Northern Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies lost about N74 billion between July and September, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). Persistent blackouts have heavily impacted the region.

In early November, the country experienced its 10th national grid collapse of 2024. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed a partial disturbance on November 5, caused by multiple line and generator failures.

October saw three separate grid failures, disrupting power nationwide. Northern Nigeria was also affected by the sabotage of the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, causing a two-week blackout across 17 states.

The affected states included Kaduna, Kano, Gombe, and others, which faced significant power outages. The disruption further stressed the region’s energy challenges.

The five distribution companies (Discos) in the north—Kano, Abuja, Yola, Kaduna, and Jos—reported N73.68 billion in losses. They billed N209 billion but collected only N135.6 billion, reflecting the ongoing power supply issues.
