Nigeria, Rwanda Clash in Cricket Opener

Hosts Nigeria and East Africa invitees Rwanda, will get action underway on Wednesday (today) at the maiden four-nation West Africa Trophy tournament, which runs till October 15 at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval, Onikan, Lagos, The PUNCH reports.

The Nigeria Cricket Federation organised the 10-day tournament with Ghana and Sierra Leone the two other West African countries in the quartet.

Rwanda arrived the country on Tuesday ahead of their game against Nigeria, while Ghana and Sierra Leone faceoff in the second game of the day.

The Rwandan clash is the first international game the Yellow Greens will be playing in almost a year since finishing brilliantly in the first phase of the West Indies 2024 ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers in Kigali last December.

While the Yellow Greens are yet to register an international game under their belt in 2023, Rwanda played at the East Africa Cup in August where they won just one of 12 matches.

In the ICC T20 rankings as at September 29, Nigeria are currently ranked 42nd in the world while Rwanda are 20 places below in 62nd. Sierra Leone and Ghana are ranked 59th and 61st respectively.

The West Africa Trophy will witness two games per day for the entire duration of the tournament.
