Romania to Buy Latest Generation F-35 Fighter Jets From US

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Romania has increased its own defense spending from 2% to 2.5% of GDP.

Romania intends to acquire the latest generation of American fighters – F-35 jet aircraft to strengthen its air defense. Such a statement by the country’s Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) is quoted by Reuters.

The number of aircraft and terms for their acquisition have not yet been disclosed.

According to the agency, Romania, as a NATO country, has an American missile defense system, and since last year, a permanent Alliance battle group has been located on its territory.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Romania has increased its own defense spending from 2% to 2.5% of GDP.

Romania considers the availability of operational air defense capabilities a key condition for achieving its own defense policy goals.

In March, the Romanian Ministry of Defense also announced its intention to purchase Abrams tanks manufactured by General Dynamics. Before that, in December, the ministry signed an agreement to acquire 7 Watchkeeper X unmanned aerial systems from Israeli defense electronics firm Elbit Systems for about 1.89 billion lei (about $418.02 million).
